Chemicals That May Cause Cancer

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

In June, the National Institute of Health added eight chemicals to the government’s list of chemical an biological agents that may cause cancer.

Formaldehyde, a chemical with a distinctive odor, is widely used in industrial manufacturing and as a preservative in laboratories and funeral homes. It is listed as a know carcinogen. Perhaps it will be finally eliminated from personal care products and cosmetics, in which it (or its other formulations as formaldehyde-releasing preservatives TEA (triethanolamine), DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (monoethanolamine), or DMDM Hydantoin are widely used. Have you checked your label lately? Yes, they are there, in many high-end, luxury products and even some natural products in which you would not expect to see them.

Aristolochic acid, which is found in herbal supplements, is also classified as a carcinogen.

Styrene, captafol, cobalt-tungsten carbide, certain glass wool fibers, o-nitrotoulene, and riddelliine are “anticipated carcinogens.”

What’s in Your Mattress?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Mattresses, including crib mattresses and kid’s mattresses, are full of industrial chemicals, most of which are toxic and can cause a range of health problems.

Of course no one wanted to actually create toxic mattresses – but they apparently did not think about the effects of chemicals on one’s health when they designed and developed what we know as “traditional” mattresses. For example, most crib mattresses are
covered with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to make them waterproof. In order to make PVC pliable, industry has to add phthalates, which can leach into the air and contribute to the development of asthma, allergies, and, according to some scientists, even cancer.

Then there are the fire retardants in mattresses, which usually include boric acid (also used to kill roaches) and formaldehyde (a probable carcinogen). These chemicals are widely used because they are very effective, especially in mattresses using highly combustible polyurethane foam.

Just the smell of traditional mattresses put me off when I searched for a crib mattress for my baby – and ended up with Naturepedic, which contains NO nasties.

Toxic Chemicals Around Us

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Some of the most toxic chemicals in the world are also the most common and we encounter them daily in a variety of ways – plastic bottles, furniture, mattresses, containers, baby bottles, electronics, and even personal care products. These chemicals include phthalates (they make certain plastics like PVC pliable), BPA, PFOA, formaldehyde, PBDEs (fire retardants), and dioxin.

Check out my pages dedicated to potentially hazardous materials and ingredients for more information on these and other dangerous chemicals and don’t forget to watch “Toxic America,” a special two-night investigative report on June 2 and 3 at 8 p.m. ET on CNN.
