The following is a list of companies that create natural and/or organic beauty products free of known or suspected toxic materials and other nasties. Most of their products are also suitable for use during pregnancy – but remember to read the labels and familiarize yourself with the ingredients.

This list is not (and probably never will be) absolute but will be updated periodically with new additions to the super fast growing green beauty family!  Please keep in mind that even those products that are certified natural or certified organic may have some natural or artificial (but approved) ingredients that can be an irritant or allergen or may be considered potentially unsafe by others.  For example, phenoxyethanol is generally viewed as safe and has replaced parabens in many natural products (although most organic certifications such as Ecocert do not allow it) but a lot of purists prefer not to use it.  As products with phenoxyethanol can be certified natural under various certification organizations, I won’t exclude product brands that use phenoxyethanol in personal care products, but I will try to avoid them personally (as there are better ways to preserve certain products).

Beautycounter is a new company that updated an existing business model and made it much better – as it has consultants with whom you can place an order if you like, it reminds me of Avon in a way, but much better as the ingredients are clean. In fact, the company banned 1,500 ingredients from its products (BHT, BHA, parabens, and so on). The product line is extensive and includes a good selection of make-up products such as tinted moisturizers, foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, eye shadow, mascara (which is fabulous), lip shine, lip gloss, lip sheer, and make up removers. Butter London
Butter London was founded by two British women and, now as a US company, continues to be run by women (check out their web site – almost exclusively women-operated). It started as a nail polish brand that was 3-free – but the nail polish (available in about 50 fabulous shades from demure to risqué) is now 8-free (in addition to the usual 7 nasties, it is also free of TPHP).  The nail polishes are by their nature still made with chemicals, but have none of the nasties we want to avoid.  The company also offers other make-up products, but those do still have more chemicals than I ideally prefer. Go for the nail polish, though – it works and looks fabulous.
